Slip Testing in Airports

Slip Testing in Airports

Munro have slip tested at nearly every major airport and many minor ones throughout the UK.  Whether the surface is subject to millions of international travellers annually, or a few highly skilled engineers each day, the requirement for a low risk of slip remains the same.  Munro’s accurate and impartial testing can ensure that standards are met and both staff and visitors are kept safe.

Airports present factors which will serve to increase the risk of a slip, such as high traffic from external entrances, the pushing/pulling/carrying of loads, a distracting environment, a number of food/drink outlets and a 24/7 environment that makes cleaning challenging.  Slips are not inevitable however and armed with the right information from a slip risk assessment it is possible to reduce slips and associated claims, often inexpensively.

Slip resistance testing can be carried out at the specification stage, and we have conducted slip tests on a range of flooring surfaces proposed for use in airport environments.  Such an approach ensures that the correct level of grip is achieved from the beginning, aiding future management.

Slip resistance testing can be carried out in situ on a periodic risk assessment basis.   Slip risk assessment of this nature is a powerful tool to both determine the real, in-use, slip resistance of floor surfaces, and the requirements and effectiveness of any contamination control measures.  Evidence of regular slip risk assessment can be used to robustly defend slip injury claims.

Why should you carry out slip resistance testing?

Slip resistance testing can be carried out following a slip accident, for responsible parties, insurers or lawyers/the court.  Crucially, those slip resistance testing service instructed by the court will occur 2-4 years after the event, by which time the floor surface may have changed.   An expert impartial report produced closer to the time of the accident can provide a far better insight to the risk of slipping at the time of the accident.
